Inscribed in the History of France but also in that of Europe, the events, marking over the centuries the evolution from Antipolis to Antibes Juan-Les-Pins, embody the true heritage of the town. Antipolis, a real trading port welcoming Greek ships, became Antiboul on the arrival of the Romans. The town was then a privileged place of passage of the Mediterranean Basin and thus, of trade. Until the installation of the Franks, Antibes will know many invasions.
A military city
In the 11th century, the ships, bearing on their sails the blue flag with a white cross at the origin of the city's coat of arms, sailed from the port to the Holy Land. This is how the city becomes feudal and Antibes learns the French language. The military vocation of the city is finally initiated by the Hundred Years War. A real border town, Antibes is also a besieged city. Thus, Charles V, François I and his successors will strengthen, over time, its fortifications. Unfinished until 1710, the ramparts and fortifications of the fortress will be completed by Vauban. During the 18th century, the plague followed by new sieges will ruin the economic activity of the city.
Growth and tourism
Following the scoundrel attachment of the County of Nice to France in 1860, the town of Antibes, discreet during the French Revolution under the Consulate and the Empire, experienced a real boom. The development of the interior of its lands, in 1894, leads to the beginning of the dismantling of its ramparts. It was thus in 1882 that the Cap d'Antibes welcomed its first tourists and that the seaside resort of Juan-Les-Pins was created.
The assets of the town of Antibes
Following the First World War, the city continued to grow, but remained less urban than some neighbouring coastal cities. This aspect of Antibes is finally what makes all its charm today and allows many artists to feel at home here.
Indeed, Prévert, Audiberti, Greene or Picasso are an integral part of the history of the town at the heart of which they found great inspiration.
The old town, the archaeological sites, the ramparts but also the Fort Carré, true witnesses of past events, give access to a real daily learning about the history of the town and its authenticity which today makes all its charm and uniqueness.
The Museum of the Bastion Saint André, jewel of the town, brings together and exhibits all the archaeological discoveries. In the heart of the old town, a magnificent Roman mosaic tells the story of Antibes.
With its twenty-three kilometres of coastline, Antibes Juan-Les-Pins has real environmental assets. Unquestionably the first city of the Sophia-Antipolis technology park, the city of Antibes has been able to combine its economic development with the preservation of its architectural, historical and, more particularly, environmental heritage. Indeed, the town's environmental policy is today a real life project with the aim of preserving the health and well-being of its inhabitants but also of its tourists.
Finally, every year the town hosts events such as the famous Yacht Show in April, and also the Voiles d'Antibes, "The Classic Yachts Challenge".
