The town takes its name from one of the two capes that border this small seaside town: Cap Cavalaire, which is located to the west and Cap Lardier. The origins of Cavalaire-sur-Mer probably date back to antiquity; excavations have shown that a port was active at that time, as well as a village and a more rural habitat. There are also traces of an occupation by the Ligurians and the existence of a town dating from the Gallo-Roman period.[+]
In the Middle Ages, this small area of Gassin, named Cavalairo, was a popular natural anchorage because it was sheltered from bad weather. The port prospered, thanks to fishing and trade, and a good clientele frequented this place. A refuge in case of storms, the bay of Cavalaire-sur-Mer is a privileged landing place for Provençal and Genoese sailors but also for pirates.
It was only in 1939 that Cavalaire-sur-Mer became independent from Gassin, to which it had been attached since the French Revolution, and finally became a commune in its own right.
