“Even for those who have seen Switzerland and Savoy, the Esterel and its dark-green foliage is a sight to behold. Here, the Alps die with dignity.” - Victor Hugo
The Esterel is a jewel of the French Riviera. Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the limestone landscapes of Provence, this volcanic massif once formed part of the African continent and was torn from it 250 million years ago, at the same time splitting from what is now Corsica, which can sometimes be spotted in the distance. This rugged landscape of red rock covers 32,000 hectares (79,000 acres) of steep-sided coves, jagged ridges, public woodlands and juniper maquis (scrubland). It is a paradise for hikers, horseback riders, walkers and all lovers of unspoilt nature – a nature so unspoilt that, close to the Var coast and yet far removed from the modern world, time seems to have stood still.

The Esterel is based mainly around five municipalities, Saint-Raphaël, Roquebrune-sur-Argens, Puget-sur-Argens, Les Adrets de l’Esterel and Fréjus, grouped together since 2013 within a single district authority by the name ‘Esterel Côte d’Azur Agglomération’, and has been occupied since prehistoric times, as can be seen at the Archaeological Museum in Saint-Raphaël.
2,700 hours of sunshine per year
The Var is known to be one of France’s sunniest destinations. Exploring the Esterel is the best way to make the most of its natural wonders all year round.
Unique places
The mysterious Île d’Or (Golden Island) off Le Dramont, the Corniche d’Or road running along the coast between Cannes and Saint-Raphaël, the observation point looking out over the Etangs de Villepey lagoons, the calanques and caves of the Esterel, a moped ride to take in the countless panoramic views – just some of the wonderful experiences to be enjoyed.
Exceptional landscapes
On foot, by bike or by boat, each town or village offers breathtaking views.
Year-round leisure activities
In summer and winter alike, the Esterel offers a wide range of activities, from paddle-boarding and gliding to via cordata, scootering, skateboarding and electric mountain biking.
A rich heritage
Discover the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela as it passes through Puget-sur-Argens, admire the basilica of Saint-Raphaël, take in the sweeping views from Les Adrets de l’Esterel, or explore the Roman remains in Fréjus, which will take you back in time 2,000 years!

So what about property rentals? The offering is astonishingly varied, starting from luxury villas with at least four bedrooms, a swimming pool of course, and – if possible – panoramic views over the Esterel and/or the Mediterranean, listed at €8,000 to €15,000 per week in peak season. It is worth noting that prices are lower in Roquebrune-sur-Argens, which is set back from the coast, than in Saint-Raphaël, which is by the sea. French and international clients are generally drawn to either contemporary-style properties or traditional residences, provided that they have been brought up to date in terms of comfort and amenities (air conditioning is always an asset!). Sea-front apartments, of which there are many in Saint-Raphaël, are rented from around €1,000 per week. As an alternative to the beach, many clients from France and northern Europe opt each year for apartments with views over Fréjus marina. Everyone has their own way to enjoy the Esterel!
