The large-scale operation initiated by David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, to make the Croisette more attractive, luminous and safe began with the major urban architecture competition launched in April 2021. The aesthetics of the famous boulevard attracted the attention of the biggest firms and the verdict fell in September 2022. The famous Atelier of Urbanism Roland Castro and the international architecture firm Snøhetta, which is responsible for major projects such as Times Square in New York, the seafront in Thessaloniki in Greece and the National Opera in Oslo in Norway, won the competition for this unusual and historic project.
"The Croisette is a strong symbol of Cannes and one of its economic engines. However, no structural development has been carried out there for 60 years. It is essential to upgrade this legendary promenade, which hosts the world's most important and prestigious trade fairs, conferences and cultural events every year. For this, the Cannes City Council chose to rely on the expertise and know-how of the architects of the Atelier d'Urbanité Roland Castro and Snøhetta. Their project was the best and most beautiful. It is qualitative, visionary and high-end. It takes into account all the complexity of the entrusted space, shared between pedestrians, bicycles, cars and buses. It was essential to be able to reconcile all this. The Croisette today must respond to a quality of life but also to energy and frenzy. The site will reflect the very identity of Cannes: a city on a human scale, proud of its French and Provencal roots, and open to the world. Today we are taking a historic step for the future of Cannes. The Croisette must move into the 21st century," said David Lisnard.
To reinforce the elegance of the area, the promenade will now be covered in red granite, echoing the old Suquet district, the Cannes Festival carpet and the intense terracotta colour of the Esterel Massif. Various Art Deco-inspired motifs will cover the floor. In the form of golden details, these inlaid decorations will indicate the main points of interest to walkers, such as the major hotels, the accesses to the beaches or the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes. They will also mark out the cycle path.
Among these new features, a line of custom-made furniture, specially designed for the Croisette, will also complete the development project. Benches with a rounded and curved design will be positioned along the boulevard. They will provide privileged views of the boulevard and the bay, as far as the Esterel Massif. Totally integrated into the landscape, they will also act as protective barriers against battering rams in order to make the promenade safer. In addition, the installation of Art Deco style shades will provide shade and coolness.
More elegant, more secure, more planted, more illuminated, but also more responsible with the renovation of the underground networks, the Croisette will be both aesthetic and transformable, dedicated to business but also to leisure, luxurious while remaining accessible to all.
To enjoy it, the inhabitants of the Cannes area and holidaymakers will have to wait for the end of the works planned for 2026.
