History of Juan les Pins

Juan-Les-Pins, commonly known as Juan, is a seaside resort and district of Antibes, located in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the Mediterranean Sea. Even if one distinguishes Juan-Les-Pins from Antibes, the two sites are intimately linked.

It was in 1880 that the son of Queen Victoria, the Duke of Albany, gave birth to the commune.

In the past, Juan-Les-Pins was only a large pine forest bordered by beautiful sandy beaches.

In the 1920s, this charming seaside resort was largely developed under the impetus of Edouard Baudoin and the wealthy American Frank Jay Gould, who built a casino and a ten-storey hotel there. Numerous personalities were invited there, such as André Gide, Cocteau and Chaplin.

The greatest notoriety of the city: jazz. Since 1925, during the Roaring Twenties, its art has settled here for eternity. After the Second World War, Juan ended up being the Mecca of the great names in jazz. Indeed, it was in 1960 that Antibes Juan-Les-Pins saw the birth of its first jazz festival, which quickly gained unparalleled renown and managed to attract great artists such as Ray Charles, Armstrong, Hancock, Sydney Bechet, Georges Benson and Ella Fitzgerald.
