More than 4 years will have been necessary to revive the splendour of the Château de la Croix des Gardes in Cannes, one of the largest and most spectacular villas on the French Riviera. Erected on 10 hectares of green parkland, like a watchtower over the preserved forest of the Croix des Gardes, this residence overlooking the bay offers an exceptional panorama of the snow-covered Alps, the Estérel hills, the Lérins islands and the intensity of the blue Mediterranean as far as the eye can see.
The Château de la Croix des Gardes: 100 years of history in Cannes
Built at the beginning of the 20th century by the Swiss industrialist Paul Girod, the Château de la Croix des Gardes belongs to the very closed circle of residences that bear witness to the grandeur of the Côte d'Azur through the ages. Its successive owners have left their mark over time: Italianate gardens at its creation, a neo-Palladian remodelling borrowed from Wrotham Castle and numerous enlargements and decorations entrusted to renowned architects and decorators. In the 1960s, this monumental house became the refuge of Gustave Leven, the CEO of the Perrier group. His visit left an almost indelible nickname for this jewel of the Côte d'Azur, the Villa Perrier.
Ideally perched at an altitude of 210 metres at the top of the Croix des Gardes massif, this 5-storey residence, recognisable by the 4 Ionic columns that adorn its façade and the wings that seem to support the main building, now extends over 4000 m2. Two guest houses, two staff houses and a few outbuildings are added to this grandiose construction. The gardens, studded with century-old trees, Mediterranean and rare species, are masterpieces of symmetry, and stand out in an ecosystem conducive to tranquillity. In the wake that accompanies the gaze towards the horizon, the 33 m2 swimming pool seems to melt into the Mediterranean in a palette of contrasting blues.
A dream setting which, in 1954, inspired Alfred Hitchcock who chose to shoot some scenes of his cinematographic masterpiece To Catch a Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.
